Growing Gilfeather Turnips?
Enter the 2025 Gilfeather Turnip Contest
As summer turns to fall, local gardeners start to look forward to their fall harvest. Gardeners anxiously anticipate the first hard frost when they can harvest their Gilfeather turnips and admire their glorious size and shape.
It’s not too soon to start thinking about the upcoming Gilfeather turnip contest at Wardsboro’s famous Gilfeather Turnip Festival on October 25 and consider entering your Gilfeather turnip. This year Howard Weiss-Tisman, a reporter from Vermont Public Radio is our turnip judge. Mr. Weiss-Tisman reports on statewide issues including education, agriculture, energy, and mental health.
The categories this year are: Heaviest grown in Wardsboro, Heaviest grown outside of Wardsboro, Most interesting shape, Junior grower 1st prize, Junior grower 2nd prize, Judge’s choice and (back by popular demand) Best Dressed! Dress your crazy shaped turnip as a celebrity, character, or favorite personality.
It’s free to enter- just bring your turnip to Wardsboro Town Hall, second floor before noon on October 25.
The Gilfeather Turnip Festival is a fundraiser for the Wardsboro Public Library, Wardsboro School Club, and Scouting America Troop #428.
